Your guide collects you in Nairobi after breakfast and the road turns south through Maasai country — open rangeland, cattle, dust devils on the horizon. By early afternoon you reach Amboseli, where the snow-capped dome of Kilimanjaro presides over everything. After lunch you head out on your first game drive, threading between the green swamps where great families of elephant feed at their leisure. Sundowners and a first night beneath the mountain.
Dawn is the mountain's finest hour — clear, immense, blushing pink before the clouds gather. Two game drives fill the day, with the middle hours spent at leisure by the pool. Amboseli's elephants are among the most studied on earth and they move close and unbothered; you will also find lion, cheetah on the open pans, buffalo and a riot of birdlife over the marsh. An optional visit to a Maasai manyatta rounds out the afternoon.
A long and beautiful drive north lifts you out of the plains, past Nairobi and up onto the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, where the land falls away in one of the great views in Africa. Lake Nakuru National Park is a rhino sanctuary — both black and white — and its alkaline shore draws flamingo in shifting drifts of pink. An afternoon game drive takes in Rothschild's giraffe, waterbuck and the leopards that haunt the yellow-barked acacias.
You travel south-west through the Rift Valley farmlands and Maasai country to the Mara, arriving in time for lunch at camp. Your afternoon game drive is your introduction to the greatest wildlife theatre on the continent: lion prides at rest in the long grass, topi standing sentinel on the termite mounds, elephant crossing the plain in silhouette. Dinner by lantern, with the sounds of the bush pressing close.
An early start with a picnic breakfast on the plains, and the whole day is yours to roam. Cheetah on a termite mound, a leopard draped along a branch in the Talek riverine forest, hippo pods grunting in the shallows. From July to October the migration is here — wildebeest in their hundreds of thousands and, if fortune is with you, a river crossing. A dawn hot-air balloon flight can be added.
A final game drive at first light while the cats are still moving, then breakfast and the drive (or a short scheduled flight) back to Nairobi. A day room is arranged for a shower and a meal before your evening departure, and your guide sees you to the airport with a promise to plan the next one.
